Struan Walker is the name in all hockey lovers' households right now. Just 12 games played into his debut season in the Dutch Hoofdklasse so far, he’s going viral. The Scottish striker has been exceptional for Oranje Rood, leading the line in immense fashion as they storm to the top the league table. With 16 goals bagged, Struan sits top goalscorer, while producing some of the most talked about performances of the year. If you’ve not seen his blistering four-goal rout against title favourites Kampong, you’re missing out...
We recently spoke to Struan about adapting to life in the Netherlands, developing under a new playing style, and why he continues to back the Grays Hockey JB8.
1. Hockey In The Hoofdklasse
What’s been the key to hitting the ground running in such a competitive league?
“I’m not sure there’s one key, but a few important things. I’ve really focused on my mental preparation, understanding what’s required of me in each game and getting into the right mindset physically and mentally – I’ve really dialled into that. I’ve also been trusted a lot here. The team has been incredibly welcoming, and I’m genuinely happy and having fun. Playing alongside world-class players helps too. It’s a mix of all of that.”
Your four goals against Kampong set a new record. What was going through your mind?
“Honestly, during the game I just thought, ‘This is mental.’ After the first goal I didn’t really think about it too much, my mind moved onto what’s next for me and the team. I was fixed on thinking about what else I could do if the moment came again. Only after the game I got a moment to reflect and thought ‘well, that was mental’!. I have to say though, the opportunities were there, made by the team and I did my job by executing them. Performances like that won’t happen every week, but it was special and to build on that, I think the big thing now is staying unpredictable so defenders can’t read where I’m going to flick, making sure they don’t know my cues etc...”
What part of your game has improved the most since moving to the Netherlands?
“My flicking has improved, but the biggest change that I don’t think people speak openly enough about, has been my mental side of the game. I feel my calmness, more relaxed, and genuinely happy mentality on the pitch has had a huge impact on my performances and results.”
2. Grays Hockey JB8 Hockey Stick: The Choice Of Struan Walker
The Grays Hockey JB8 hockey stick has been central to Struan’s huge drag-flicking success this season. Designed with executing the advance technique in mind, the ever-popular Jumbow profile, combined with a modern late bow shape, the stick delivers exceptional energy transfer, accuracy and control - ideal for elite penalty-corner specialists.
How has the JB8 supported your drag-flicking at Hoofdklasse level?
“The JB8 is perfect for flicking. The late bow and where the weight sits, make it much easier to generate power. The shape of the Jumbow and the later bow really gives me everything I need.”
Does the JB8 give you an edge in your penalty corner success rate?
“Definitely. It has a nice soft feel for control, and the late bow helps me release the ball more discreetly which of course makes it harder for defenders and goalkeepers to read. That unpredictability is a big advantage.”
3. Product Spotlight: AeroCage X – Lightweight Speed & Stability
Built for elite-level speed, agility, and grip - the AeroCage X is engineered for players who demand comfort and responsiveness on all surfaces. With advanced technical construction and lightweight cushioning, they support Struan’s high-intensity style.
Struan has backed the AeroCage X for a number of seasons, and as he continues to reach new heights, they’re still his go to.
4. Adapting to the Hoofdklasse
How does the Hoofdklasse compare to the English Premier Division?
“The English league is very physical and can be quite brutal at times. The Hoofdklasse has a beautiful style of play – it's fast, intelligent, and very heavily based on the tactical element which I’m really enjoying. I was actually surprised by how defensively focused the teams are too. It varies from team to team, but overall, it’s very structured around a defensive mindset and building up the attack. They’re two tough leagues to play in!”
How has your training and physical preparation changed?
“Massively. I’m training a lot more here and travelling more too, so I’ve been focussing on the physical preparation before games and training. I suppose I’ve had to become more professional with recovery and mobility. Flying makes you stiff, so I’ve been really focused on staying limber and ready for every session. I’m also doing specific exercises that I've been suggested which are really helping me to stay robust and in top condition throughout the week.”
How has Dutch tactical and technical detail influenced you?
“It’s opened me up to a completely new style of hockey. Not better or worse, just different and it’s been really fun to get stuck into it. I’m learning so much about different presses, how to use my body in certain moments, and how to read the game. It’s exciting because I’m learning all the time.”
5. The Future Looks Bright
Struan’s rapid start to life in the Hoofdklasse has cemented his status as one of Europe’s most exciting attacking talents. With Oranje Rood pushing for the title and Scotland aiming for the 2026 World Cup and 2027 EuroHockey Championships, the future looks bright. With the Grays Hockey JB8 hockey stick and Grays Hockey AeroCage X hockey shoes by his side, Struan continues to strive for global success.
